Glen Canyon Dam is the concrete arched dam along the Colorado River, its reservoir being Lake Powell. Construction on the dam began in 1956 and was completed in 1966 with the purpose of providing hydroelectricity. The dam is 710 ft tall and 1,560 ft long!
The Glen Canyon Natural History Association provides tours of the Glen Canyon Dam. Tours are approximately 45 minutes long and limited to groups of 20 people. During September 15th – October 31st (the time period of the race) the races are scheduled every hour on the half hour from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Admission fees are: Adults (17+) $5, Juveniles (6-17) $2.50, Children (0-6) FREE. There are also group, senior, and military rates.
