San Pedro — Island or Peninsula?

You may have heard Madonna sing about it a time or two: “Last night I dreamt of San Pedro…” In the midst of these lyrics, you may wonder, "where is this place, and why has it earned the nickname, La Isla Bonita?"

Roughly 15 miles east of mainland Belize lies this infamous island, San Pedro. It’s very beautiful, wonderfully tropical, and perfectly charming. But is it actually an island? A quick glance at a map would indicate that it’s a peninsula more than an island, but La Península Bonita just doesn’t roll of the tongue quite as well as Isla Bonita.

If you wander the sandy streets of San Pedro, you’ll soon discovered the island's unique geography. Ambergris Caye, where San Pedro is located, is a long, narrow strip of land that stretches parallel to the mainland. Quick note, the northern end of Ambergris Caye actually shares a border with the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula.

“So if it borders the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, that means it’s not an island, right?” Oh, how astute you are, fair traveler.

Ambergris Caye on a whole is a peninsula and decidedly not an island. But, and this is a nit-picky but, if you look at the boundaries of San Pedro, there is a body of water (albeit very, very small) that separates it from the rest of Ambergris Caye. So, if you count this tiny bit of water as enough to qualify San Pedro as it’s own island, then an island it shall be.

Feel free to argue either side at your next family gathering. We hope this keeps you up at night. Now, we’re moving onto more exciting endeavors and taking a look at some of the best things to do on this charming slice of Belizean paradise. Feel free to join us in exploring.
