Welcome to Paradise: 5 Ways To Explore Greater Zion

Welcome to Greater Zion, a stunning region in the southwestern United States where adventure meets breathtaking landscapes. From majestic canyons to vibrant towns, Greater Zion offers a wealth of experiences for outdoor enthusiasts and culture seekers alike.

If you're planning a visit, here are five must-do activities to add to your itinerary:

1. Zion National Park

Greater Zion is home to Utah’s first National Park, Zion. No trip is complete without a visit! The park is distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep, red cliffs accented with massive sandstone stripes of cream and pink that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Lace up your hiking boots and venture into the park's diverse terrain!

If you’re not ready to hike, then take a drive! Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River. Also, along the river, partly through deep chasms, is The Narrows, a popular wading hike. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, Zion National Park promises unforgettable outdoor adventures.

2. Discover State Parks

There also are four State Parks that offer distinctive experiences and just as much beauty as Zion. There is the juxtaposition of Sand Hollow with its brilliant blue reservoir for boating, fishing, and diving and acres of adventures on the dunes of Sand Mountain. Snow Canyon State Park is notorious for its unique geologic features such as ancient lava flows, sand dunes, petrified dunes, and deep red sandstone cliffs.

Quail Creek State Park features a 600-acre reservoir popular for boaters and anglers. Lastly, Gunlock State Park and Reservoir is surrounded by rustic red rock and extinct, black lava, cinder cones. Gunlock comes to life in spring with seasonal mountain runoff sometimes forming waterfalls that can be accessed via a short hike.

3. Experience St. George's Historic Downtown

After days of outdoor exploration, immerse yourself in the charm of St. George's historic downtown area. Wander along Main Street lined with quaint shops, art galleries, and local eateries. Discover the city's rich history by visiting the Brigham Young Winter Home or the St. George Temple. Be sure to stop by the St. George Art Museum to admire regional artwork and exhibitions that capture the essence of Greater Zion's landscapes!

4. Off-Highway Vehicle Haven

Greater Zion offers acres and miles of off-highway vehicle (OHV) driving throughout the region, however, no single destination is as popular as Sand Mountain in Sand Hollow State Park. Located near Hurricane, Sand Mountain features more than 20,000 acres of sand dunes and rock formations to explore via ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides. Experienced outfitters and guides can offer tips and information for the dunes, crawling, or climbing, as well as provide unique experiences like sunrise or sunset tours.

5. Test Your Endurance

Greater Zion is also home to the Zion Half Marathon and the Zion Ultras by Vacation Races. The Zion Half Marathon is a challenging but incredibly beautiful steady 13.1-mile climb toward the mouth of main Zion Canyon. Chase the sunrise (and a PR!) over The Watchman and come run below the vibrant cliffs of Zion. With a picture-perfect finish in the lovely town of Springdale, the Zion Half is the perfect addition to any Zion itinerary.

The Zion Ultras allow participants to attempt to complete distances of up to 100 miles! Taking place on the trails of some of the most scenic mesas and desert trails on earth, each distance includes unique vistas of the thousand-foot sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park. It's hard to beat seeing the sun rise and set over these towering cliffs.
