Meet Your Host Country: New Zealand
The nation of New Zealand is made up of two main islands, North and South, located in the South Pacific Ocean. Remote and bursting with natural wonders, it is home to strong indigenous culture, active volcanoes, award-winning Marlborough wines, and bustling metropolitan cities.
November and December bring springtime in New Zealand. With mild weather and quieter tourism, this is a perfect time for us to take to the trails and get lost in the remote beauty of South Island.

Māori Culture
The Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand, known to them as Aotearoa. Arriving from Polynesia over 1000 years ago, Maori traditions continue to be an integral part of culture on the island.
Māori culture extends far and wide and can be found in art, cultural performance, and even attitudes throughout New Zealand.
Middle Earth in the South Pacific
No discussion of New Zealand is complete without a mention of The Lord of the Rings. Over 150 locations across the country were used to film the entirety of the movie trilogy.
Thanks to these films, New Zealand's vast plains, rolling hills, and sheer mountain walls are ingrained in our popular culture.

Sunday (Day 2): Abel Tasman National Park
We're setting the bar high with the first run of the week as we take you on a scenic section of the famous coastal track of Abel Tasman National Park, the country's smallest but most visited National Park, known for its golden beaches and granite cliffs.
After logging a few miles with the turquoise and blue gradients of the sea as our backdrop and enjoying a lunch in the park to refuel, we'll embark on a guided waka paddling adventure to get a closer look at the water, wildlife, and nearby sea caves. This activity will split us into two groups. While one group paddles, the others can enjoy a scenic water taxi ride or beach walk.
We'll end the day with a group dinner in the town of St Arnaud on the edge of Lake Rotoiti, one of South Island's best kept secrets. This popular spot with locals sits at the edge of the Nelson Lakes National Park and is an idyllic destination for hiking and both summer and winter sports.
- Abel Tasman N.P., waka paddle excursion
- Centre of New Zealand Run (7.4km)
- Alpine Lodge St. Arnaud
- St. Arnaud, NZ
Monday (Day 3): River Ride and the Westport Coast
Today, we're taking you from a seaside track to a lakeside track with an easy run in Nelson Lakes National Park along the Brunner (Moana) Peninsula of Lake Rotoiti. After the run, we'll have lunch in Murchison before you choose your own afternoon adventure - you can either experience the Buller River by way of a human-powered white water raft or Chevy-powered V8 River Shark Jet boat. Whatever your speed, you'll be sure to enjoy the native forest and lush greenery along the way. After we dry off, we'll head to Westport for a group dinner and some shut-eye.
- Jet boat ride through the Buller Canyon
- Brunner (Moana) Peninsula trail run (6.1km)
- Bella Vista Motel & Chelsea Motel
- Westport, NZ
Tuesday (Day 4): Explore the Coastline to Hokitika
A short drive from Westport, today's run will take place along the Cape Foulwind Walkway where you'll savor every inch of the panoramic coastal views. Also along the pathway, you'll see the fur seal breeding colony and the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse.
After the run, we'll drive to Punakaiki for lunch and to explore the limestone landscape of the "pancake rocks" and blowholes. The rest of the afternoon/evening is yours with free time to relax at our hotel for the night or explore Hokitika - a town with a history of jade hunting and gold mining.
You'll do dinner on your own tonight, giving you a chance to explore town and discover something great!
- Cape Foulwind lighthouse, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, free afternoon and evening
- Cape Foulwind Walkway run (7.3km)
- Hotel TBD
- Hokitika, NZ
Wednesday (Day 5): Arthur's Pass
We'll start the day with a run near Lake Brunner - a beautiful lake with a backdrop of mountains and ancient forest - before heading to a scenic byway in the Southern Alps called Arthur's Pass that connects the east and west coasts of New Zealand. Here, we'll explore the Rocks of Castle Hill, a mecca for rock climbers and skiers, before heading to the town of Methven for a group dinner. The town of Methven is a vibrant ski town in the winter and home to summertime hiking through the Canterbury Plains.
We'll spend the night at our hotel in nearby Christchurch - the South Islands largest town, known for both cutting-edge and historic architecture and plenty of cuisine options.
- Castle Hill Rocks
- Castle Hill run (5km)
- Ibis Hotel
- Christchurch, NZ
Thursday (Day 6): Lake Tekapo & Flight Over Mount Cook
With a window seat for every passenger, today's adventure is sure to be a core memory. After an early wake up call, we'll board the Grand Traverse "flight of a lifetime" and spend nearly an hour exploring New Zealand's highest mountains and largest glaciers with a bird's eye view.
Today's run is designed for us by our very own Adventure Racing Course Guide and will take place on a large, private farm (station) near Lake Tekapo. What happens next is up to you because the afternoon is yours to explore! Lake Tekapo, known as the bluest lake in New Zealand, has beautiful lupins that grow around the lake and lucky for us, the ideal time to see them in full bloom is during our trip!
This lake is also one of New Zealand's only Dark Sky Reserves and, after a group dinner, we'll observe through telescopes and then settle into the hot springs for a two-hour guided stargazing experience that combines astronomy and storytelling.
- Free afternoon, Scenic flight over Mount Cook and glaciers, stargazing & hot springs activity

- Peppers Bluewater Hotel

- Optional hike
- Alps to Ocean trail run (10km)
- Rydges Hotel
- Queenstown, NZ
Saturday (Day 8): Queenstown Livin'
Queenstown is a hub of adventure so instead of picking just one thing for all of us to do, we left this day open for you to decide how you'd like to cap off your New Zealand trip! From wine tasting and hiking to bungee jumping and parasailing, there is something for everyone in this town. If you need suggestions, check out our blog for Queenstown activities!
We'll all meet back up in the evening to embark on a cruise across Lake Wakatipu and spend the evening celebrating our farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
- Free day to explore Queenstown, farewell dinner
- Moke Lake run (6km)
- Rydges Hotel
- Queenstown, NZ
Sunday (Day 9): Depart from Queenstown
We're sorry to say it but even this adventure must come to an end. You're free to stick around and explore some more on your own or head home to tell your friends and family about your week abroad. Either way, it's not "goodbye," it's "until next time."

MORNING Run (~7:00 am)
Ok, we know you're on vacation, but starting the day early means we get to show you so much more. You didn't think we'd be sleeping on this trip...right?
On most trips, we'll have breakfast at the hotel before departing for a 7-12K trail run. Pack your day bag (included as trip swag!) with a fresh outfit and an activity for the journey.
After the race we'll regroup to shower (when available) and refuel with lunch.
AFTERNOON activity (~11:00 AM)
After our run, each day brings something new! We'll have lunch and then head out for a range of activities depending on your Global Adventure.
Active Adrenaline - These trips keep your heart racing with more active fun like glacier treks, rock-climbing, kayaking, and more.

Evening wind down (6-8:00 PM)
It's time to wind down and enjoy the night! We'll have dinner together as a group at a local restaurant or at the hotel. Dinners typically include set menu options and wine or beer.
For two of the evenings you will be free to explore and find dinner on your own (not included in trip cost). Ask our local team for recommendations...or grab some food at the hotel, turn your phone on silent, and enjoy hotel amenities to re-coop from an active day. The night is yours!
We got you! Expect a team text before bed with details on tomorrow's race, weather conditions, and packing suggestions.
Trail Runs and Hikes
Our trail runs will take you into the countryside, where you'll feel like part of the iconic landscapes that drew us here. We'll have crew on course to mind you, markings to guide you, and finish line food to revive you.
You can take these runs at your own pace - or go for gold! At the end of the week everyone earns a Global Adventures finisher medal, plus special awards for our fastest racers.
run difficulty & training
A typical Global Adventures trip includes 6 trail runs ranging from 7-12K in length. Most of these runs will have a decent amount of elevation gain. It is not uncommon for us to walk the uphill portions and run when the terrain is flat or downhill. If you want to train, we recommend working up to back-to-back trail runs with varied elevation gain.
We ask runners to maintain at least a 20-minute trail pace on these runs.

The Races & Activities
How difficult are the runs?
Global Adventures are meant to challenge you. That being said, we welcome runners of various levels and will support you towards the finish line.
Each day we’ll be running/hiking between 7-12K (approx. 3-6 miles). Most of these runs will have a decent amount of elevation gain. It is not uncommon for us to walk the uphill portions and run when the terrain is flat or downhill.
We plan for runners to maintain at least a 20-minute per mile trail pace on these runs. If we believe this pace becomes too difficult for a runner, we may ask them to sit out a run or offer a shorter course for them.
Do I have to run every day?
This is your vacation- you should do what you want!
If you want to take a break for a day or two, then by all means do it. Our goal is to make sure you have the best possible experience on the trails, whatever that means for you.
Are there aid stations?
There are no aid stations in these trail runs.
Most adventurers choose to wear a hydration backpack or carry a water bottle in hand (along with a few gels or other snacks as needed).
You are required to bring your own hydration system. Our team loves the hydration options developed by Nathan Sports. Give them a look!
Will we run into animals on the trails?
If you are lucky, you’ll get to see some local wildlife (Moose, goats, whale, oh my!) We will be visiting wild places and encounters with animals are always a possibility. However, we will be on well traveled trails which tend to keep the animals away.
All Global Adventures trips partner with expert guides from the area to provide tips on staying safe on the trails. Mosquitos will vary greatly with the climate and even changes year-to-year. We recommend packing mosquito repellent.
Can I bring someone who doesn't run?
If you want to bring a partner to the event that doesn’t want to participate in the runs, that’s totally fine. They'll still get to join in the daily activities and explore the destination - just not on the trails. They can join us as a fast hiker (20 minutes per mile) if they choose!
Just sign up for the event as a regular participant, but let us know in the registration notes that your partner is not running.
What other activities will we be doing?
Each Global Adventure is different - expect a range of activities like historical tours, boat cruises, hands-on workshops, and more!
For activities specific to this trip, check out the itinerary. You'll also receive a detailed daily itinerary a few weeks before your arrival date.
Not passport ready? Join the email list.
We'll send you updates about registration opening, price jumps, and more to keep you on track!
Still have questions? Our team loves to talk to new adventurers! Schedule a chat with us.
