Course Descriptions & Maps

This scenic, mountain course runs around the northern half and along the western edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, offering spectacular views above and below the hoodoos. The race is run at high elevation, with most of the miles on this rugged course between 7,000 – 9,000 ft.

30K  SOLD OUT

Course Time Limit: 8 hours
Race Start Time: 7:00 - 7:30 am

The 30k starts at the mouth of Proctor Canyon and climbs 700 ft. over 2 miles on doubletrack up to Proctor Canyon aid station (mile 2.1).

From there, the route heads southeast for 1.6 miles toward Blue Fly aid station (mile 3.7). After Blue Fly aid, the course will head west on a rugged doubletrack road. This will be mostly downhill for a little over 4 miles before coming to the Badger Creek aid station (mile 8.2).

From there you will take a right running along forest service road 109. This will be a nice doubletrack road for the next 4 miles. It will be a steady climb with about 1,500 ft. of elevation gain. You will peak out around mile 12 where it will begin the nice steady downhill for the remainder of the course. We will have a water only station set up at the FS road 601 junction (mile 13.2).

You will jump onto a nice downhill singletrack section for the next 3 miles bringing you into the Proctor Canyon aid station one last time (mile 16.2). From it is all downhill for 2.1 miles to the finish line at the bottom of the canyon.

Minimum Pace and Cutoff Times

100 mile, overall cutoff - 36 hours
50 Mile, overall cutoff - 17.5 hours
60K, overall cutoff - 15 hours
50K, overall cutoff - 13.5 hours
30K, overall cutoff - 8 hours

The link below is a guideline to help you gauge how you are doing in the race. Beating these times will help you avoid a DNF. If you find yourself consistently behind these minimums, your chances of finishing before the official close of the race will be small, but you will be allowed to continue as long as race officials believe you are in good health. Finishing after the minimum pace time at the finish will result in a DNF.

NOTE: Due to the unique conditions of the event this year, we will be minimizing crowds of any kind. One way we are doing this is to provide a 1 hour window for runners to start their race (per distance). This should aid everyone in maintaining proper distance. If you are competing for an overall top spot- you will need be at the start line at the beginning of your race's start time (as overall winners are based off of gun time). Keep in mind, that all qualifying times will be based off of chip time. Once you cross the start line mat, your time will begin. This doesn’t mean you will get more time to complete the whole race, it just means you have more time to make the cutoffs.

Don't Fear the Reaper: On the aid station cutoff sheet, there is a column for Grim Reaper times. Where applicable-specific Grim Reaper locations on this course. These are checkpoints that if missed, even by 1 second, will result in immediate disqualification from the race. There is no negotiation or exceptions under any circumstances.
NOTE: If you are concerned with beating the grim reaper times, we suggest starting your race early in the start window hour.

A race official will be on site to ensure all runners are past this checkpoint before the Grim Reaper shows up. Runners must exit the aid station before the posted Grim Reaper times in order to beat the reaper.

Avenza Offline Course Maps

Now you can use our maps offline with a gps-enabled device!

We plan to mark the course with such rigor that you should not need your own map to help you find your way. However, we have experienced blown down signs and vandalism in the past. We recommend downloading the free Avenza app (available for iOS, and Android devices) before the event. There you can find our uploaded maps that work without cell coverage.

Here's how:
1. Download the free app "AVENZA MAPS" to your smart-phone or tablet while your device is online. It’s compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows devices.
2. Open the app > Tap "Store" (Shopping Cart Icon) > Tap "Find Maps" > Search for the specific distance you would like to download. Type your search exactly as it appears below:
     Bryce Canyon 100 mile Ultra
     Bryce Canyon 50 mile Ultra
     Bryce Canyon 60km
     Bryce Canyon 50km Ultra
     Bryce Canyon 30km
3. Tap on the label on the map > tap "install" and the map will begin to download.
4. The map is now ready to use “offline”. Simply open the app, click on the Map and your GPS location will appear on the map.

Travel & Lodging

Getting Here:

The start/finish, parking, and bib pickup will be located on private property in Hatch, UT near Proctor Canyon (Corner of E Bench Rd and Forest Rd 109). This is a small town, so if you are needing supplies for the race, for camping, etc. we recommend getting your provisions prior to arriving.

Flying
Look for flights into the following airports:

Cedar City Regional Airport (CDC)
Cedar City, UT has the closest airport. It is served by Delta, but keep in mind that it is a small airport and connections may be limited. It will take you about 1 hr. 20 min. to drive to the event.

St. George Regional Airport (SGU)
St. George is the next closest airport (2 hrs. 15 min. drive), but it’s a regional airport so tickets can be more expensive. Delta services St. George, and you could take a drive through Zion National Park along the way (this detour will add an hour onto your drive).

McCarran International Airport (LAS)
Las Vegas International airport is the next closest, at just under 4 hours away. It’s an interesting drive through the desert and then a beautiful drive through the Virgin River Gorge. Just follow the driving directions from Southern Nevada above. Car rentals tend to be inexpensive and most major airlines fly into Las Vegas so finding a good deal should be simple.

Salt Lake International Airport (SLC)
Salt Lake is another option that will work for some. It's just over 4 hrs. away, but depending on your post race activities, it may be a good option for you. Salt Lake City serves most major airlines and is a Delta hub. Car rentals are cheap and the airport isn’t huge so it’s very easy to navigate.

Driving
From Las Vegas-
Head north on Interstate-15 through Nevada to enter Utah. Take exit 57 in Cedar City, UT onto Highway 130/Main St. Turn right onto UT-14 E/Center St. You'll drive on a scenic byway through a canyon and over a pass before coming to a T. Turn left onto US-89 N until arriving in Hatch. Turn right onto E 100 N and follow the signs/GPS to the event location at the
mouth of Proctor Canyon.

From Salt Lake City-
Head south on Interstate-15 toward southern Utah. Take exit 95 toward Panguitch/Kanab, UT. Continue on UT-20 E and turn right onto US-89 S until arriving in Hatch. Turn left onto E 100 N and follow the signs/GPS to the event location at the mouth of Proctor Canyon

Camping: If you're a fan of camping, the best option by far will be to stay near the staging area in Hatch, UT on E Bench Road - That's right at the start and finish lines! This is primitive camping, but there is enough space for everyone should you choose to camp. Whether it's a tent, your car, or an RV* all are welcome.

The cost to camp is a flat fee of $40 no matter if it’s for 1 night or the duration of the entire event (starting the Monday of race week through Monday after the race). Reservations are not required. Just show up to the event, pay for a campsite with cash and you can choose where to camp.

Please note that only cash will be accepted for camping fees.

*No RV hookups available.

Showers are available at Riverside Ranch for $10 (that includes access to their group lounge and laundry facilities). It's just a 10 minute drive from the finish line.

Lodging: While the area is a bit remote, there are lodging options in the nearby towns. You can find a few motels in Hatch, just a few minutes from race HQ. We also recommend looking in Panguitch (13 minutes away) and Bryce (30 minutes away). Here's a useful link to find lodging in the area. If you're looking to stay closer to the park entrance, Ruby's Inn is a great choice.

Packing List

Whether this race will be your first ultra marathon, your first trail race, or your first time running in this area of the country- we recommend coming prepared. We've created a packing list to help you think through what you may need for your race, so you can minimize stress and feel prepared.

Bib Pickup

For all race distances, bib pickup will take place on Friday, May 28 from 11 am -7 pm at the mouth of Proctor Canyon (the same place as all start and finish lines). If you cannot make it during that time, early morning bib pickup will be available Saturday morning beginning at 4:00 am.

DROP BAGS: If you are using drop bags, those must be brought to the staging area no later than 8pm on Friday.

>>Each drop bag must be labeled with your name, bib number, race distance, and aid station.

Aid Stations

D4R2188

• The 100 miler passes through 14 aid stations, and 6 water-only stations.
• The 50 miler passes through 8 aid stations, and 3 water-only stations.
• The 60K passes through 6 aid stations, and 2 water-only stations.
• The 50K passes through 6 aid stations, and 2 water-only stations.
• The 30K passes through 4 aid stations, and 1 water-only station.

Aid stations will be stocked with various grab and go items. Due to the unique circumstances of this event, protocols may be adjusted to minimize contact and interaction with others. For example: volunteers and those working at the aid station may not be helping you refill your hydration pack, or helping you grab food.

Aid stations will have both salty and sweet, single serve, grab and go items. They will also have water, Gnarly Hydrate electrolyte drink (single serve packets), soda, pickle juice shots, honey stinger gels, salt caps and electrolyte caps, anti-chafing agent, sunscreen and self-serve first aid supplies. We will try our best to have real food items such as bacon, quesadillas, potatoes, etc. come race weekend.

If any item is of critical importance to your ability to finish, please consider putting it in your drop bag. While we want to do our best to help each runner finish the race, food selection is often a guess as to what each runner will want or need, and we occasionally guess wrong. For example: if you always need a Coca Cola soda at mile 80, do not count on the aid station to provide this; you should put it in your drop bag.

At our busiest aid stations we try and staff a medical volunteer to help with larger issues. See your race guide for more details.

In addition, aid stations will have composting toilets with plenty of hand sanitizer.

All Vacation Races events are zero waste, with the goal of sending no trash produced at the event to the landfill. We do this by greatly reducing the amount of single use items that cannot be recycled. We will be making some exceptions at this event to keep things sanitary and all of our runners safe. Unfortunately, this means we will be creating more waste than usual. We will still have our Zero Waste crew out there sorting through all of the trash to recycle as much as possible. Please help us out by placing trash in the appropriate containers.

Awards & Swag

100 Miler finishers will be awarded a hand-crafted belt buckle. Each are made using organic materials gathered on the course and preserved in resin. Other distance finishers will be awarded their choice of either a locally-made award or a finisher medal. The locally-made awards include Navajo jewelry pieces, ceramic mugs, and various crafts handmade in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. Special awards will be given to the **top 3 overall male and female finishers for each distance as well.

**In addition to a finisher award given to everyone who finishes the race, we award the overall top 3 male and female finishers for each race distance. We will not be doing an award ceremony at the race this year. Instead, we’ll verify results after everyone finishes, and mail the top 3 male and top 3 female awards (for each distance) out after the event. All finisher awards can be claimed as soon as you cross the finish line.

At our ultras we base the overall winning times off gun time, not chip time. Here's why: we offer a larger, more unique overall winner prize and if we waited to for all chip times to make sure we have the fastest we wouldn't be able to give out any of the awards and would have to ship them. These awards don't ship well, and we want to be able to give them out in person at the race - it's funner that way. If you are interested in competing for a top award you will need to line up at the front at the starting line so your chip time and the gun time are the same.

Pacer & Crew Info

Pacers must register with the race prior to the race start. Pacers are only allowed for the 100 mile and 50 mile distances. There is no cost to register a pacer. Runners will be able to register their pacer(s) when checking in. Runners may register multiple pacers for the event, but each runner will be issued a single PACER bib and is allowed only one pacer at a time on course. Pacers must have their PACER bib visible at all times.

• 50 Miler Pacers will be able to join their runner at Red Canyon Aid Station 2nd Pass (mile 37.6) or later (wherever crew access is allowed).

• 100 Miler Pacers will be able to join their runner at Straight Canyon Aid Station or (mile 57.4, mile 77) or Crawford Pass Aid Station (mile 67.2).
Please note: 100 mile pacers must understand they are committed to running the remainder of the race with their runner, as there are no other crew-accessible aid stations after the 2nd pass of Straight Canyon Aid Station (mile 77).

Pacers will need to drive themselves to these aid stations to join their runner.
Click here for a map and directions to various aid stations for crewing and pacing.

*60K, 50K, and 30K runners are not allowed to have pacers on course with them. Failure to comply with these rules will result in disqualification of the runner being paced.

Save time, and register your pacer or crew before event weekend

Crew Information
Crew access is only allowed for the 100 mile, 50 mile, and 60K distances. The accessible aid stations are shown on the aid station cutoff sheet.

Due to the social distancing requirements from state and local agencies, crew will be greatly restricted at this event. Same as with Pacers, each runner may request a bib for crew members. Only 1 crew member at a time will be allowed out of the car at the aid station, and must be wearing the crew bib. Any runners whose crew doesn’t abide by these guidelines will be disqualified, so make sure your crew understands and follows all guidelines and restrictions at aid stations. Please choose crew members that will treat our volunteers and staff with respect while you are out on the course.
Note: As we get closer to the event, crew restirictions may be lessened. The race director will make adjustments and announcements for any major changes several weeks before race weekend.

There are no shuttles for pacers or crew. They will need to plan and figure our their own transportation needs throughout the event.

Crew access driving directions:

• East Fork Aid Station

• Coyote Hollow Aid Station
Straight Canyon Aid Station
• Crawford Pass Aid Station

*There are no crew allowed for the 50K and 30K distances.

Things to See and Do

We realize that the races in this series are out of the way for most runners, and it may be the only time that you visit these breathtaking areas. One of our biggest desires at Ultra Adventures is that you walk away from this event having fully experienced what the region has to offer. Even a 100 mile course can only capture a portion of these unique areas. We want you to get into and explore the heart of the national park, walk through that remote slot canyon, see that incredible overlook that is not part of the course. Most often, these spectacular areas are protected as part of a national park, monument, or wilderness area where races are not permitted as part of the management plan. These are often the areas most frequented by tourists, but  are nevertheless places that we feel you must see while you’re visiting. It is our hope that through a more in depth exploration of the area, you will become more connected to the local landscape, thus creating more stakeholders in its preservation.

Here is our list of favorite trails in the surrounding area:

Fairyland Loop- (8 miles) This loop trail is not too crowded and will still take you through some great hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park, without having to pay the park entrance fee (the turnoff to the trailhead is just before you enter the pay booth). An alternate to the Fairyland loop would be to run the rim trail to all of the beautiful overlooks.

Willis Creek- (4 miles) Beautiful nearby slot canyon in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, don’t miss it!

Powell Point- (9 miles out and back from forest service road 143 junction) The crowning overlook of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to the south and east and Bryce Canyon National Park to the west, while standing on top of hoodoos at 10,000ft. It’s unbelievable. The road can get washed out at times so call the Escalante Ranger district (435-826-5499) to check status if you don’t have 4wd.

Riggs Spring Loop- (8.5 miles) Beautiful forest and hoodoos on this trail that is at the southernmost point of the park.

Kodachrome Basin State Park- The Panorama trail (3-6 miles), Angel’s Palace trail (1.5 miles), and Shakespeare Arch trail (1.7 miles) are all amazing. Great campground (sandstone playground) and it’s not too far from the race’s starting line. (Make sure to check out Grosvenor Arch while you’re in the area.)

Grosvenor Arch- Not a difficult hike, but a gorgeous destination

Casto-Cassidy-Losee Canyon Loop- (13 miles) very colorful loop full of hoodoos outside of the national park in Red Canyon. A great mountain bike ride. An out and back up Losee Canyon will suffice if you’re short on time.

Golden Wall/Castle Bridge/Buckhorn Loop- This is a gorgeous 5 mile loop that you can run in Red Canyon. Take the Castle Bridge section of the trail when you come to it, it’s the more scenic option.
