Reasons to run
ZION ULTRAS
The Zion Ultras run across high-desert mesas, linking long stretches of singletrack, slickrock, and exposed desert trails. The courses are demanding, and the terrain ever-changing. Runners will experience long, sustained climbs, narrow rim sections, and sections with technical footing that will test mental fortitude. But what makes this race special is how nonstop the views are. Starting and finishing from basecamp at Smithsonian Butte, the experience feels remote, expansive, and immersive from the very first step. You’re moving through wide-open mesas with huge sightlines to Zion’s sandstone walls. West Temple. The Watchman. And the Virgin River far below. It will keep hitting you over and over: I get to run here? If you love a course that keeps you guessing while offering nonstop natural beauty, this one will stick with you.

6:00 a.m. Start
13 Fully stocked aid stations / 2 water-only stations
36 Hr. Cutoff

The course begins at Ruby Rider Ranch and follows a dirt road toward Wire Mesa, passing along the edge of Smithsonian Butte Wilderness before transitioning to singletrack around Wire Mesa. The course continues into the Grafton area through rolling desert terrain and additional singletrack. From Grafton, the course follows Gooseberry Mesa Road to Mondo Z, then heads out onto Gooseberry Mesa. Trails trace the rim above the Virgin River and desert floor, crossing a mix of slickrock and singletrack before returning across the mesa. The course drops off the mesa via the Mondo Z Cut, passing the cliffs made famous by Red Bull Rampage before descending through ATV roads and washes into the Virgin Desert. Runners continue along desert singletrack above the Virgin River canyon and toward the Highway 9 corridor.
After crossing Highway 9, runners climb steadily to Smith Mesa, the course’s longest sustained ascent. At the top, the terrain transitions to singletrack and ATV roads before dropping onto the Flying Monkey Trail. This section narrows into rocky, technical singletrack and can be particularly challenging in the dark. One section features a large drop with a fixed rope to assist with the descent. If you’re not fully comfortable on technical descents, it’s important to take your time here as you make your way back toward the Virgin River area. The course then travels through Dalton Wash, where water crossings are possible, before heading out toward the Guacamole area across extended sections of slickrock. After returning through Dalton Wash, the route turns south and works back toward Highway 9.
The final segment crosses Highway 9 again, follows ATV roads, and climbs back up the Mondo Z Cut before returning to Ruby Rider Ranch via dirt road

Due to the nature of this course, Zion Ultras is not a spectator-friendly event. Spectators are permitted only at the start/finish staging area. Aid stations are restricted to authorized crew and pacers wearing the appropriate bibs, and only at designated crew access locations.
We ask friends and family to respect our efforts to minimize congestion and dust by not attempting to follow runners at multiple points along the course. The best place to support your runner is at the finish line.
Our events take place around protected national park landscapes, and we are deeply committed to minimizing waste while preserving the natural beauty of the places we run, without compromising safety, efficiency, or hydration on course. To achieve this, we’ve implemented cup-free racing across the series. We DO NOT offer cups at the ultras. You are required to have your own hydration system. Merchandise will sell a limited number of reusable cups and a limited selection of hydration products, such as handhelds, belts, and vests.
We aim to send as little waste to landfill as possible. Use our clearly marked stations to sort items correctly.
Compost (Green Lid)
Food scraps and compostables (e.g., fruit peels, uneaten food, liquids). Empty containers first.Recycle (Blue Lid)
Plastics #1–7, aluminum/steel cans, paper, cardboard, and glass. Rinse and empty.Landfill (Black Lid)

Live results will be hosted online by Laurel.
Visit the results button below for final finisher times after the event is completed. Keep in mind, the results are not official until all runners have crossed the finish line, and have been reviewed by the event director. Because our age group winners are based on chip time, it is possible to cross the finish line before someone else in your age group while still finishing with a slower time than them. Got questions about your placement? Please email timing@brooksee.com.
Ship My Medal:Top Finisher but missed the awards ceremony? You can request to have your place medal shipped to you! Visit this link to have your place medal shipped to you.
Photos:New for 2026, FinisherPix will be at each event to capture your race memories. Within 24-48 hours post-event, your photos will be available at the link below. You can purchase your race photos ahead of race day during registration or directly through FinisherPix.
The FinisherPix Photo Pack includes ALL photos we identify of you in all digital formats (Basic digital image, Digital images with Finish Time, Digital images in certificate format). A link to download all images will automatically be emailed to you when photos are available online. Click the button below to view race weekend photos once available. Search for your individual photos by last name or bib number.
Drop bags will be permitted for longer race distances. Specific details, including which distances and aid stations allow drop bags can be found here. Please observe the following rules:
-
All drop bags must be labeled with name, bib # (in large print), aid station, and race distance. Optional, but a good idea if your label comes off, is a card inside with the same information and contact information. Please label your bags the day before the race on your own or at check in.
-
All drop bags must be left in the designated drop off location at the expo by 7pm the night before the race.
-
No valuables or fragile items in your drop bags. We are not responsible for any lost/stolen items.
-
Watch the weather forecast. If there is any chance of rain, place your items in zip lock bags inside of your drop bag.
-
Minimum size: Gallon size freezer zip lock. No grocery store plastic bags or garbage bags.
-
Maximum size: Shoe box size for single pass and daytime aid stations. Small duffle or small carry on for multiple pass aid stations.
Half Marathon and 30K runners should not use drop bags. Please speak with a race official if this will create a problem for you.
Drop Bag Return
-
Generally, all bags come back about 90 minutes after the aid station fully closes (all distances that pass through it).
-
There will be a "Return to Finish Line" area at all aid stations that allow drop bags. This is an area where you can place your drop bag after you no longer need it from that particular location and we will try to get it back early if possible.
-
You must place the bag in this area. Crew or volunteers are not allowed to sort through them in order to reduce the risk of a drop bag inadvertently being returned to the start line.
-
If you do not want to stick around, we can mail your drop bags to you after the race for $35 per bag.
-
All finishers will receive a finisher medal. Unique finisher medals will be provided to the finishers of all distances. Special awards will be given to the top 3 overall male, female and and non-binary and top 3 male and female masters finishers for each distance as well. Unlike our Half Marathons, we do not offer age group awards for these events.
Ultras Overall awards are based on gun time. Here's why:
-
At our Ultramarathons, we offer a larger, more unique overall winner prize. Calculating awards based on gun time allows us to award these prizes in-person, instead via mail. We believe strongly in celebrating your accomplishments at the event (plus, the prizes don't ship well...)
-
If you are interested in competing for a top award you will need to line up at the front at the beginning of your start window so your chip time and the gun time are the same.
-
The official Race Shirt is picked up at expo upon check-in, and the official race medal is awarded upon crossing the finish line.
Exclusive Race merchandise will be available both at the race expo and near the finish line! When possible, we'll have race merch for sale in our online store after the race is over. Please allow time for us to add items online. Now, you can make it last forever with an iTab, a custom engraved plate with your name and finishing time that clips right onto your medal ribbon.
Pre-order before race day, and it’ll be sent to you automatically after results have been verified and posted. Shipping will take about 2 weeks post event. If you missed out on pre-order, no worries. You can order yours today for just $15, including postage & packaging here. The most convenient (and most fun) place to stay during race weekend is at the Official Vacation Races Campground! It is located at Ruby Rider Ranch in Apple Valley, Utah, which is the same location as our expo site as well as the start and finish.
You can sleep in your car, bring a tent, hammock, RV (not advisable in inclement weather), or rent a tent from us for an additional fee. Whichever you choose, you still have to reserve a spot. There is plenty of space for campers but keep in mind, this is primitive camping and will be treated like a large group site. You will have neighbors and make new friends

Yes—cell service is good to excellent on almost all parts of the course. -
What happens if I drop (DNF)?
